There are two copies of the CERES instrument aboard Terra-one scanning across track while the other spins biaxially so it can "see" the atmospheric profile of Earth's horizon. The CERES sensors are designed to measure the Earth's radiant energy budget on a global scale every day. This animation shows the CERES viewing swaths as it measures heat escaping from the top of the atmosphere; red indicates higher levels of heat, while blue and purple show lower levels. CERES is managed at NASA's Langley Research Center.
